Update v1.1

The version 1.1 update is out. Here's a rough changelist:

  • Music
  • Credits
  • Options menu
  • A bunch of art improvements
  • Some missing sound effects
  • Fixed missing help text in composite forensic game
  • DNA computer puts DNA on photo printout
  • Improvements to the thread tool

Overall, it's the same game as the release version, but with a new coat of paint. In the rush to release, a lot of things get left on the cutting room floor, so this round of polish is the first step on that ladder of improvement.

I wouldn't be happy leaving it as it is, though. I'm excited about the next update, v1.2, which will add in two new forensic minigames. The first is fiber anaylsis, for detecting and matching different clothing fibers. Fun(?) fact, this minigame was fully implemented in the initial release! Everything from the clues on evidence, to the minigame itself, through to the generated textile types was all complete, but we never found time to hook it into the unsolved case generator.

The 'case generator' in question is the engine at the core of Mobile Crime Lab. It's the code that generates the puzzles that the detective has to solve. During development, it was designed to construct arbitrary chains of indirect logic, to embed clues and inferences, and to make cases ranging from simple to vastly complex. Unfortunately, it didn't work. It would frequently generate cases that had no solution. Before release, it was completely gutted, and the result is the current case generator, which has a very basic set of stock cases. Or, in other words, it suuuuucks. If you've played the game as it is, you've probably noticed that it gets pretty samey, pretty quickly. Don't worry, we know. When v1.2 drops, the case generator will be fully operational, and generating unique puzzles that are always surprising and/or thrilling.
